I remember when I was a kid I’d heat up my pop tarts in the toaster and they’d be too hot to eat right away because duh, toaster, but I’d plop them on a plate and then run out to the bus stop and get on the bus. With my pop tarts on a plate. Looking back, it’s an odd memory to have but I am amazed that no one stopped me from walking onto the bus with a paper plate of pop tarts.
Now I’m not judging if you like your pop tarts room temperature, hot, toasted, frozen, or somewhere in the middle of all that. I’m here as a fan of pop tarts and for those who are with me. For those who walk around with your too hot too handle pop tarts on a plate as you commute to your daily spot of school or work, todays Handmade Holidays craft is for you.
It’s a hot pack made to look like pop tarts!!! I chose to represent wild berry and strawberry milkshake, but I did also consider going for classic cherry or strawberry.
This project takes about an hour to create two.
Supplies needed: tan fleece, light pink fleece, purple fleece, miniature Pom poms, teal yarn, sewing notions, long grain white rice. Funnel is optional but recommended.
I started by cutting a 10”x6” rectangle out of the tan material. I made sure to cut two of these to create one pop tart.
Next I cut a 8”x5” light pink rectangle.
Then I grabbed my mini Pom poms and dumped quite a few on the pink fleece to create my sprinkles. In the end I decided less was more and took off about half of these. I really struggled to make the sprinkles look random haha
Next I sewed the little poms onto the pink fleece. I did this by hand and sewed them like you’d sew a button.
Here’s what the back looked like after I was done sewing.
I then repeated the cutting out process for my wild berry pop tart and then I added teal yarn to create the frosting zag line.
I sewed this by hand in about the same way that I did the Pom poms.
Once the tops are done being embellished you’ll lay the top (the frosting) onto the pastry and sew. Don’t worry about perfection because pop tarts quality control is lacking and they don’t worry about perfection either. (See: why do some of my pop tarts only have half the pastry frosted?! 😭)
Once your frosting is sewn on you’ll sew your two pastry layers together leaving a spot open for you to put in your rice.
I like to use a funnel because it’s easier and usually less messy. You’ll simply place the funnel in the opening and pour rice in. I filled my hot packs about 1/3 full. You can make them 1/2 full, up to you, I’d just advise to not fill them to the brim because then the hot pack is really overfilled and will be hard to be useful. You want it to be flexible and move around.
Now that they’re filled to where you want them to be filled to you’ll sew the opening closed! And that’s it!
These look so great! I’d even heat them up and put them on a plate! Speaking of heating up, I always recommend to do one minute, then 30 second intervals after that. I find one minute is usually enough. Also you’re heating these up in the microwave, not your toaster oven!
What flavors do you think you’ll make?! These would also make cute pillows! If you loved this post please share it with a friend or two! You might also consider, “buying me a coffee” to help keep the website ad free!
I hope you guys love these as much as I enjoyed making them! Be sure to tag @creativeunicorncrafts on socials so I can see your projects!! Come back tomorrow for more Handmade Holidag crafting fun!
