I love sitting in front of a body of water. It’s so calming, and relaxing. Listening to the gentle waves as they roll in. Feeling the breeze coming off the water. Watching kids off in the distance burying their dad in sand and making him a mermaid tail. Days at the beach are the best!

So to enhance my next beach trip I decided to make a beach blanket. Of course I can buy a beach blanket that folds up all nice into a carrying case and I suppose I could have added straps and Velcro for this one to become that but I wanted a simplistic sewing project that any beginner to do! In fact, if you don’t have to have a sewing machine but if you have needle and thread and some patience you could sew this by hand as it’s literally two seams. I am an Amazon Affiliate and any qualifying purchase made from a link I will make a small commission.

To start you will need three beach towels- but not just any towels, I recommend three 30”x60” towels because when you turn one sideways you can create a blanket that is 60”x 90” relatively speaking since I’m not factoring in a seam allowance. I suppose you could get wild and make two of these and sew them together to make a 120”x90” which would accommodate a lot of butts and bodies haha. Trust, the 60”x90” is still very generous.

The only other materials you’ll need are your sewing machine, thread, and scissors to cut thread. This project took me twenty minutes and that includes taking pictures and reloading my bobbin! This project, given the fact that it’s two seams and requires no cutting, is great for any beginner on a sewing machine! I think it’d also make a great gift! So grab those towels and start sewing! Speaking of, before I saw these on clearance (yes! and only $6 each!) at my local Meijer, I was going to buy these HIGHLY recommended beach towels on Amazon. Exclusivo Mezcla 4 Pack Microfiber Cabana Striped Large Beach/Pool/Bath Towel for Adults (Mixed-Color, Blue/Yellow/Green/Pink, 30″ x 60″)—Soft, Quick Dry, Lightweight and Plus Because I’d get enough, there were 4 and I needed 3, but I thought it’d be cool to have a matching dry off towel to go with my -lounge-around- beach blanket!

Take two of your towels and make them right sides facing – if they have a right and wrong side. Sew along the longest part of the towels. Now open this and along the bottom of what you just sewed together, pin your third towel, right sides facing so the third towel is pinned on its long side. *Note – I didn’t pin the initial two towels together, I was just careful at my sewing machine to keep what I needed to be sewn, sewn. I thought it might be sloppy for the second seam so that is why I pinned it haha! Don’t fret if your ends don’t match up perfectly after sewing, it happened to me and it’s no biggie!

Also when I got to the middle of the first seam sewn, I laid the selvage flat to make it easier to sew. I sewed along the edge of the towel’s original seam. It wasn’t as thick there so it was really easy on my machine! Once you’re done with your second seam, you’re done!

Here the beach blanket is on my queen size bed, taking up most of it! I can’t wait to take this to the beach. Maybe I can convince my husband to go tomorrow! Wish me luck!
