I love a good chunky hat with a big pom! I love it even more when it’s a quick and fun project! This is more of a guideline of what I did with some tips on how to tailor it to other size heads! My hat did end up with a huge cuff which is great when it gets super cold and windy because it’ll really keep my head warm! This hat is crocheted to make a rectangle and then it’s stitched up one side to make a tube, then one end is gathered to create the hat form. I added a pom I made with a pom maker but you could purchase some fluffy ones too for visual interest!
The yarn I used was Kaleidoscope Bulky yarn by Euro Baby. You can substitute any bulky yarn! My skein had 203 yards in it and I used all of it (big cuff and pom) and had to add a little bit of a coordinating worsted weight yarn to finish the pom.
Project Time: 3-4 hours
Materials: Bulky yarn 200+ yards (more for larger sizes), 7 mm crochet hook
CLOVER Amour Crochet Hook (7.0 mm)
-Chain 42, turn
-Two chains from hook double crochet and continue to double crochet into every chain, ch 2, turn (40)
-Then double crochet in back loop, do this for every chain, ch 2 turn (40)
-Repeat row 3 until desired length which will be the circumference of the hat unstretched
-Sew the two ends together (like in the pictures below)
-Gather one end and sew closed, add a Pom
-Wear or gift with joy!
For my pom I did run out of yarn so like I said earlier, I just added some more yarn!
I prefer the Clover Brand pom pom maker, it hasn’t let me down yet! And you can get a convenient 4 pack with multiple sizes on Amazon!

I have a 21.5” head and mine before seaming unstretched was about 18.5” For a smaller fold up cuff I’d chain 36 and following the same steps as listed above. My husband has a head size of 24” and I would still recommend a starting chain of 42 for him but a finished length of 21.5-23” for a comfy fit.
For children I’d keep in mind their heads are smaller and I’d recommend shorter starting chains like 25-34 chains and finishing about 1-2.5” below their head measurements!
Don’t sweat too much though, the cuff allows for extra room and it will be stretchy! So this is a forgiving pattern/guideline for a quick hat!
