I love a crafty, well thought out decoration. I super love when it’s a trifecta of frugal, fun and easy to make! These puffy fleece letters are exactly all of that! We’re expecting our first baby which happens to be a boy and I wanted him to have letters that hung like a banner above his crib as part of the decor. I think a banner of letters is a great gift idea for anyone you know with a name 😉 These were very easy to make in an afternoon! This page contains affiliate links to products. First I started by doubling up some fleece I had gotten in the remnants section at JoAnns Fabric- any fleece will do, I recommend a plain or mostly solid color, busy designs can take away from what you’re trying to achieve sometimes. You can also use felt, I just preferred fleece!
Then I free-handed the letters that spell his name, all capitals. Keeping in mind to keep them on the thicker side and to make them a bit big. My letters stand about 5″ tall. Once they were all written I began to cut both layers and then stack them, putting what was my top piece as my bottom piece so I wouldn’t see any of my pen markings!
Side note: if you’re not comfortable writing out the letters free hand style you can print off the letters using a font like Helvetica (or other sans serif) and trace around those letters!
Once you have them all cut out, lay them in order and admire your handiwork!
All you need once you’re ready to sew other than your fleece or felt letters is some bits of polyfil, a needle and thread. You can definitely choose a coordinating thread, I was personally too excited to start on this and didn’t have coordinating thread haha. Later you’ll also need a piece of string and tapestry needle to hang your letters from.
I found it best to sew along one side of the letter and then stuff poly fil as I went when sewing the other side of the letter. This meant I wasn’t jamming polyfil in with a pen or other skinny object.
I also found it easy on a letter like, “R” where there is a hole in the middle to go ahead and stitch the middle first, then proceed with the outside.
Once you finish sewing all of your letters with the polyfil inside the next step is to sew a string so you can hang them! I did this by using a yarn tapestry needle and sewing *under* the stitches I had made to sew both layers together. Also make sure that you’re sewing letters in order and in the right direction!
Once that step is complete, you’re done! You can even add other cute simple fleece or felt images too. Banner flags would be fun, for Greyson I was thinking of also adding little pine trees on either end of his name, goes with his, ‘adventure’ theme! Honestly, the possibilities are endless!
Also I originally hung it up with duct tape and it had fallen by the next morning. It’s not relatively heavy because it’s just fleece, polyfil and yarn so I took two large command strips that are used to hang pictures and cut them in half, put the half with the pull down tab on the wall, then snapped the yarn and the other half on top. It hasn’t budged once since!
