Sometimes inspiration strikes in the most unexpected places — like a tangled clump of neon yarn found wrapped up in a hairbrush! That little surprise led to my latest free knitting pattern: the Neon Sour Worms Can Cozy.

I mean, what kind of life am I living?!

This cozy is a playful celebration of color and childhood nostalgia, perfect for summer crafting! The design starts and ends with bold neon orange bands, sandwiching a lively series of vertical neon “sour worms” around the cozy. Between the neon orange and the worm stripes, a yellow duplicate-stitched stripe adds a fun color break and extra definition. (A “design feature” was created!)

The vertical worms themselves are designed in repeating two-color vertical stripes:

Orange and green worms
Blue and red worms

And for even more fun, I knit three neon i-cord worms and stitched them onto the cozy, giving it an irresistible pop of texture and 3D charm.

She is so bright, right?

This cozy fits standard cans and is the perfect colorful accessory for summer BBQs, picnics, or just brightening up your everyday drink. And yes — it’s available for free as a PDF download here on my website!

Fun Facts About Neon Colors and Sour Candy:

Neon colors became popular in the 1980s, but they were first made possible in the 1930s when a chemist named Bob Switzer developed fluorescent paints. True neon colors are extremely bright because they actually reflect more light than normal colors! So basically, we’re all neon and shine super bright because we aren’t “normal” 😉

Sour candy like sour worms usually contains an acid like citric acid, malic acid, or tartaric acid — that’s what gives them their mouth-puckering punch! Malic acid (also found naturally in apples) is often responsible for the super intense “sour burst” in the first bite.

Gummy worms were first created in 1981 by the candy company Trolli, and their bright, two-toned colors were part of what made them an instant hit! Trolli’s neon sour worms helped kick off a whole new era of colorful, silly candy in the 80s and 90s.

I hope you love knitting this cozy as much as I loved creating it!
