COVID-19 is offically here in the United States and as I live in Ohio, our governor, Mike DeWine has been putting a lot of things in place to help with our social distancing precautions. Just today it was announced the bars and restaurants were allowed to continue to have carry out and delivery service but couldn’t allow patrons to dine and stay in their establishments. It became a pandemic only 5 days ago.
I’m sure there will be more restrictions put into place and no matter your feelings on that, it has made it hard to find some essentials things – including toilet paper! Luckily for my household I managed to get that 6 days ago. What I didn’t get was Lysol. I haven’t been successful in finding Lysol so I did what us creatives do best and searched to see if someone out there had a recipe for one, and my girl over at Clean Mama did!
I managed to buy all the materials I didn’t have in my house and this cost me about $25. I found everything at Meijer – which is a grocery store and more, they even had the essential oils over in their candle section! I also doubled Clean Mama’s recipe since I was using 32 oz bottles and had the room. The only other thing I did was do 15 drops each of Lemon Oil and Tree Tea Oil.
Click here for Clean Mama’s recipe!
For 1 32oz spray bottle you will need:
2 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 vodka
15 drops Lemon Oil
15 drops Tea Tree Oil
I used a funnel to make it easy for all the ingredients to go in. Once they were all there I shook it up and starting disinfecting my house! I learned on Clean Mama’s post that Vodka is great for germ killing and she recommended for this spray to sit for about 10 minutes. I personally did a lighter coat and it dried itself up within those 10 minutes!
I learned this from New Directions Aromatic Blog, “Lemon Essential Oil acts as a natural disinfectant for surfaces that also eliminates mold and achieves a streak-free shine” – this is why I chose the Lemon oil as one of my oils!
As far as the Tea Tree Oil I learned this, “But for everyday purposes, tea tree oil has antiseptic and antiviral properties and is often used topically to treat skin abrasions, acne, bug bites, and fungal problems. It’s useful for cleaning and deodorizing your household, when diluted with water in a spray bottle.” – P. Allen Smith
I know this was a creative way to disinfect my home and had Lysol been available I would have just bought some, but you know what they say, necessity is the mother of invention!
I also made PDF printables so if you’d like to create labels for your disinfecting spray you can! I did paint one bottle with acrylic paint and it’s holding up pretty well too! I also found coloring in my labels quite relaxing!
Click here for the PDFs – PDF 1 PDF 2
PDF 1 will have the stars and germs, PDF 2 will be more blank for the option of a more unique design drawn by you! These labels are 5″x7″ and I left room above “germ destroyer” if you’d like to add your name!
If you make some spray and/or use a label please tag me on instagram or share on the facebook page!
Stay safe and healthy out there friends! Wash your hands!
