I love home decor! I mean, who doesn’t?! Sometimes though I’m put off from wanting to spend even $10 on a sign I’ll only leave out for a few weeks because it’s a seasonal sign. I know I’m not alone, so I was inspired for today’s how to when I saw this sign at Meijer!
I mean, it seems easy enough. Get a canvas frame, deconstruct it, restaple it and add yarn letters. I did do a few more steps for mine, and I think it’s just as cute!
To start you’ll need some key items:
canvas – I got mine for $1 from the dollar store
acrylic paint
yarn
beads
hot glue & hot glue gun
staple gun & staples
additional options – crochet hook if you want to make a chain like I did
I started by painting the canvas first. I didn’t have orange so I just mixed yellow and red. I continued to tell everyone that it was a custom orange color haha. I mean, it’s true! I let it dry overnight but depending on how thick you paint it on, it’ll likely dry within an hour or two. Then I turned it over and decided to not pry the staples out but to cut the canvas off carefully.
Now I took my yarn and made a chain with an I/9 5 mm hook. I made 101 chains – yes I was going for a fun number! Then I laid it out on my canvas to form a cursive hello. I did a lot of dry fitting for this. It helped me see how it would look before committing it to glue. Because I kept doing that I realized I didn’t have enough room for, ‘pumpkin’ so I went with Fall. Yes I know other parts of the country and world refer to it as Autumn. I think Autumn sounds lovely and I’m partial because I have a beautiful niece named Autumn, but again, it was room constraints for me! Also in the midwest US we say Fall haha 🙂
Next I knew I wanted the frame to be darker so I gave coffee staining a try. I used coffee that had been brewed and cooled down and used a paper towel to drip into the wood to let it soak it up. My wood was already sanded but if your wood needs a little sanding, you will want to do that first so you don’t get any splinters! If I hadn’t been trying to finish this sign the morning I was making it, I think I would have liked the have soaked the wood in a shallow bath of coffee. I don’t know if that would have resulted in a darker stain but it is a little darker than pine it was! I probably could have done a few more gos with they way I was doing it to get a darker result too. After it dries, do another round, ya know. After mine was dry I did a full dry fitting and actually took a picture of it!
I liked how the cursive was scrolling in and out of the frame so I kept that going. Again, I know I was inspired by that one sign but I was really liking what I was ending up with! I was originally going to use all white beads for the word Fall but I didn’t have enough so I chose some light pink and yellow beads to fill in the gaps and I think it made it better. Reminds me of an ear of harvest corn with its’ bits of yellow, brown and tan pieces of corn 🙂
When I was ready I started gluing down the word Hello. I just gently lifted and glued underneath sections of it so I wouldn’t disturb my cursive writing too much. This method worked well for me. Then when it came to the letters I had to have faith it’d turn out okay! I would move a letter entirely but leave the other ones on there and then write the letter in glue.
Once all the words were glued on I glued the frame to the canvas and stapled it to the back. I also trimed it up so you didn’t see excess canvas hanging out.
I do wish the vertical spacing for the words was a little tighter but it turned out great! I haven’t been able to decorate as much as I usually do for fall and Halloween this year but I was glad to add this cute decoration! And it cost me $1 as I had all the other supplies!
