So I’m sitting here just fed a baby and looking around my living room noticing all that I need to clean up – empty bottles, blankets, dishes etc and I notice something else that’s missing. St. Patrick’s Day decorations! Now hear me out. I know it’s not important to decorate for such holidays and here in America we go crazy for every little holiday but it’s so nice to have a clean living room and some seasonal decorations. Really helps the hygge I always want to have going on!
Now since I’m deciding this the morning of St. Patrick’s Day I need a quick and simple craft using items I already have. I’ve always wanted to make those cute pom pom garlands and today is the day it’s going to happen! So grab your scissors, yarn and your pom makers and let’s make a festive garland!
Project Time will depend on how long of a garland you want and how many pom poms you make. My garland took about 45 minutes. I wanted to incorporate different shades of green and a gold. Other color combos could be the whole rainbow to be honest since St. Patrick’s Day can be really colorful with rainbows. Maybe you make a rainbow of poms! Or use a variegated! I used Paddy Green (dark green) from Red Heart and Grass Green (light green) from Bernat. The gold is mystery yarn! Adventures! Haha
I used a pom maker about the size of my palm. You can use any size but keep in mind if you go smaller you might want to make more poms and bigger will work great in larger spaces! Making a pom is easy peasy with the pom pom maker from Clover. Here are some pictures that are worth a thousand words so I won’t bore you by typing it all out.
Brief explanation though: wrap yarn around both wings while open. I like to wrap it several times and make it thick. Close the first wing and continue with the same yarn and wrap the second set of wings. Close both wings.
Cut in crease/in between section and then with a spare scrap of yarn wrap around and tie in a tight knot. Open both wings and pull the center apart to reveal your pom pom. Trim to shape! I didn’t worry about cutting and trimming for perfect pom poms. I kind of love that they turned out a little different from each other! Handmade stuff is allowed to look handmade!
To string up the garland I just cut a long piece of yarn and with the tails from tying the knots I tied them onto the garland – just a simple knot! This method is nice too because you can move the poms around to get the right spacing! Tie them all on and voila!
Also, my crafting apparently wore out my audience! Haha
