I’ve been making Rice hot packs for years! They’re always well received gifts and you never know when you’ll have an ache or pain and need one yourself!

Project Time: 20 minutes per hot pack

You can generally make a hot pack just about any size you like! I’ve made little ones that can be put into coat pockets for warm cozy hands, slightly larger but square ones for some areas, like the top of a hand, and I’ve made these bigger ones which are great for backs, abdominal (menstrual) areas!

To make these you’ll cut out two pieces of fleece that measure 13″ x7″ With right sides facing out, sew along the 2 long sides and one short side. I like to sew these with a 1/4″ seam. Then sew two more lines so the hot pack looks like it’s in thirds.

Now you’ll add the rice into those sections. I tend to fill mine so it’s slightly more than half. I use a funnel to make it easier! Also I use long grain white rice. In the end, a hot pack this size usually weighs in a little under a pound. I don’t recommend over filling a hot pack with rice, I like to let it have room to move around.

Once it’s all filled all you have to do is sew the top closed! For heating up in the microwave I tend to heat up a hot pack this size, starting at 1 minute and then continuing if needed at 30 second intervals. Usually 1 minute does it!

Like I said, you can make hot packs just about any size! I do recommend fleece because it doesn’t fray and it’s easy to sew around the edges like you see in the finished product in the picture above!
