I was sitting down with my morning coffee last week deciding what to make for this weeks’ challenge. It was a rainy day with sunshine in the forecast for later but right then, the coffee was hitting the spot. Until I noticed a little had spilled on the sides and I was making a “coffee” ring on my table. 😑 Then it came to me! I’ll knit a lil ol mug rug!

I had seen these for years and never took the time to make one. I decided a nice textured mug rug would be best so it wouldn’t curl or interfere with sitting a cup or mug on it.

These are a really quick knit, I was able to make one easily within an hour from start to finish- including weaving in the ends and making fringe! These mug rugs would make a great addition to a gift for a friend or a nice soft textile of home decor for your coffee table or end table! You can even knit it up in a color that coordinates with your living room decor!

Gauge wasn’t very important in this project and I used two different size worsted weight yarns and got slightly similar results. If you want a larger mug rug, increase the pattern in multiples of 4 for wider and repeat sections for longer.

Everyone loves a good layered rug, amirite?

Supplies: worsted weight yarn- leftover yarn is also great for this project as you don’t need much yarn to complete one rug, US 6/4mm needles (I used DPNs and worked them back and forth) crochet hook for fringe, scissors for trimming fringe

Finished measurements: 4.25” wide by 5.5” long (pink Bernat yarn) 4” wide by 5.75” long (gold red Heart SuperSaver yarn)

Gauge: 18 sts and 26 rows = 4”/10cm in basket weave pattern

Pattern: CO 20
Section 1
Row 1: K4, P4, K4, P4, K4
Row 2: P4, K4, P4, K4, P4
Row 3: repeat row 1
Row 4: repeat row 2
Row 5: repeat row 1
Section 2
Row 6: repeat row 1
Row 7: repeat row 2
Row 8: repeat row 1
Row 9: repeat row 2
Row 10: repeat row 1

Continue repeating the sections, alternating, until desired length. I repeated until I had completed 7 sections. Then BO.

After weaving in your ends you can decide to make fringe! I added fringe to my pink mug rug and left my yellow mug rug without fringe.

To create fringe you’ll want to cut 40 pieces 6”/15 cm long. This will give you enough to loop through to create the fringe. You can trim up the fringe after for a nice even look, or leave it long and wild!

To fringe: double over your cut piece and insert your crochet hook in one end, pull the loop through. Then take the “legs” and pull them through the loop!

Continue creating fringe with the same side up for a uniform look.

Trim your fringe if you desire! Enjoy!
